FITUR was originally established in Europe as the leading annual meeting point for tourism trade fairs and events. Its acronym derives from the spanish name Feria Internacional del Turismo (International Tourism Fair), and it is a true institution within the sector. Since its first edition held in 1981, FITUR has served as a meeting point for numerous governmental and institutional delegations, as well as the main representatives of the public-private sector, the media, travelers from all over the world, agencies, transportation, gastronomic and accommodation suppliers, among many others.

There are many reasons that affect the choice of a host city to hold an event: infrastructure, socio-political situation of the country, international relations at a global level, etc. But what happens when, a few days or months before the celebration of these events, the venue is changed? This is something that happens constantly for very different circumstances: social crises in the host country, financial crises that make it impossible to meet the investment required for an event of this nature, natural disasters, epidemics or pandemics, and so on and so forth.
